How Do I Get My Business to Show Up in AI Search Results?

Published

You get your business into AI answers by fixing what those systems can read about you: let their crawlers reach your site, put your facts in plain text, make every listing agree, earn mentions on sources they trust, and measure the answers on a schedule. Nobody can sell you the placement itself.

That last sentence is the part most guides skip, so it is worth saying before the steps. Google's own documentation states there is nothing to buy or trick here: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," and in the same breath, "Indexing and serving isn't guaranteed" (Google Search Central). Five levers below are real, documented, and yours. The answer itself is not.

Why owners are asking now

The audience moved fast. In BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 (1,002 US consumers, published March 10, 2026), the share of people using AI to find local businesses went from 6% in 2025 to 45% today. ChatGPT was the most used tool at 31%, Google AI Mode next at 23%. The same survey found 88% of AI users fact-check what the AI told them before deciding, which is a useful detail: your job is to be the thing that checks out.

Lever 1: be reachable

Start here, because it is the only lever with a definitive answer published by the companies themselves. Each AI company runs more than one crawler, and they do different jobs. One collects training data. One builds the index behind live answers. One fetches a page when a person asks a question that needs it. Blocking the middle one is how a business disappears from answers by accident.

What the vendors document, in their own words:

  • OpenAI: OAI-SearchBot is used to "surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features," and the doc says plainly, "we recommend allowing OAI-SearchBot in your site's robots.txt file." GPTBot is the training crawler (OpenAI).
  • Anthropic: blocking Claude-SearchBot "prevents our system from indexing your content for search optimization, which may reduce your site's visibility and accuracy in user search results." ClaudeBot is the training crawler (Anthropic).
  • Perplexity: PerplexityBot is "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity. It is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models," and Perplexity also recommends allowing it (Perplexity).
  • Google: "robots.txt directives for Googlebot is the control for site owners to manage access to how their sites are crawled for Search" (Google Search Central).

Two corrections worth having, because the advice going around gets both wrong. First, blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews. Google-Extended governs Gemini training and grounding, and Google states it "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search" (Google). Googlebot's rules are the control.

Second, "block the training bots, allow the search bots" is not the clean switch it is sold as. OpenAI says of ChatGPT-User that "because these actions are initiated by a user, robots.txt rules may not apply," and Perplexity says of Perplexity-User, "since a user requested the fetch, this fetcher generally ignores robots.txt rules." Your robots.txt is worth getting right. It is not a set of permissions you fully control.

Open your own file at yourdomain.com/robots.txt and read it. This is a five-minute check, and on most small-business sites it comes back clean. Allowing a crawler removes a blocker. It does not get you cited.

Lever 2: be readable

A crawler that reaches your page still has to find something worth repeating. Facts locked inside an image, a hero video, or a booking widget that a parser never runs are invisible to the systems answering your customers' questions. "Proudly serving the community since 1998" gives an assistant nothing to lift.

Put the who, what, where, and when in plain text on the page: services by name, city and service area, hours, phone. Structured data can describe the same facts for Google, but it is optional: no AI company says its assistant reads it, and Google says its AI features don't need it. Our page on why ChatGPT may not know your business has a side-by-side of vague copy against usable copy.

One honest note about schema, since it gets sold as a magic ingredient. Google retired HowTo rich results in 2023 and stopped showing FAQ rich results altogether on May 7, 2026 (Google). Mark up your business if you like, for Google's sake, but not for a badge in the results, and not for AI.

Lever 3: agree with yourself

An assistant weighing whether to state your hours is looking for corroboration. When your site says one thing, your Google Business Profile says another, and a directory from three years ago lists a disconnected number, there is no version to trust, so the safe move for the assistant is to say nothing about you or to hedge.

Google's own guidelines ask for the same consistency: use "your business's real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers," an accurate address or service area, "a phone number that connects to your individual business location," and "your regular customer-facing hours of operation" (Google Business Profile). Fix in order of control: your website first, then your Google Business Profile, then the listings you can still log in to.

Holiday hours are the one that costs real money. A customer who drives to a closed shop because an assistant repeated a stale opening time blames you, not the assistant.

Lever 4: be corroborated where AI looks

The strongest evidence on what gets cited says the boring things win. SE Ranking analyzed 129,000 domains and 216,524 pages across 20 niches, published November 24, 2025, and found that domains present on multiple review platforms earned 4.6 to 6.3 citations against 1.8 for domains absent from them: roughly three times the citation chances. The other leading correlates were referring domains, real traffic, domain and page trust, content depth, and recent updates.

For a local business that translates into ordinary work: be present and reviewed on the platforms your industry actually uses, get named on real local pages, and write pages deep enough to answer a question rather than gesture at one.

The same study is the reason we will not sell you an llms.txt file as the answer. Including it made SE Ranking's model of what gets cited less accurate, and they concluded ChatGPT does not currently rely on it. A template site from us ships with one because it is cheap, honest hygiene. It is not the lever.

Lever 5: measure, because one check proves nothing

Ask an assistant about your business twice and you can get two different worlds. In Martin Kulawik's test of 3,313 answer pairs collected between June 1 and July 18, 2026, the same question asked twice about a second apart produced exactly the same brands in only 37% of ChatGPT pairs, and in one pair out of ten the two answers shared no brand at all. That is one vendor's own test rather than peer-reviewed research, and it matches what anyone who runs these checks repeatedly sees.

So build a small routine instead of a verdict:

  1. Write a fixed set of questions and keep them fixed. Your business by name, your category plus your city, and the question a buyer who has never heard of you would actually type.
  2. Include your city in the wording. ChatGPT derives a coarse location from your IP address and may rewrite "near me" into a city name before searching, so the answer you see is shaped by where you are sitting (OpenAI Help Center).
  3. Save the answers verbatim, with the assistant named and the date, including the runs where you are not mentioned.
  4. Repeat monthly and read the trend, not the snapshot.

Nobody publishes a timeline for how long a fix takes to reach an answer, because crawlers re-visit on their own schedule and the models behind the answers change underneath you. Treat any specific promise of "results in 30 days" as a sales number.

What this looks like done for you

Our AI Visibility Monitor is that routine, run for you and written down: what the assistants said about your business word for word, each quote tagged with which assistant said it and when, a 0 to 100 score of how readable your own site is check by check, and a review of your Google Business Profile. Anything we could not verify is stated as unknown rather than guessed. You can run it once for $5, which includes a second run 30 days later so you can see what moved, or keep it running at $99 per month per location.

If the fixing needs doing as well as the measuring, the SEO Crew works on your existing site every week at $399 per month with the Monitor included, and a person approves every change before it goes live. When the site itself is the blocker, a rebuild ships with the structured data, sitemap, robots.txt, and llms.txt already correct. We are in Orangevale and work with businesses across the Sacramento region in person.

What we do not do is promise you a spot in an answer. You control the inputs. The assistant controls the sentence.

Common questions

Can I pay to appear in AI search results?

Not for the answer itself. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that indexing and serving are not guaranteed. Anyone selling placement in an AI recommendation is selling something they do not control.

Which AI crawlers should I allow?

The ones that build live answers: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, Claude-SearchBot for Claude, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, and Googlebot for Google. OpenAI and Perplexity both recommend allowing their search crawlers in robots.txt. The training crawlers, GPTBot and ClaudeBot, are a separate decision.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding, and Google says it does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search or act as a ranking signal. Googlebot's robots.txt rules are the control for Search and its AI features.

Does an llms.txt file get my business cited?

There is no evidence that it does. SE Ranking's study of 129,000 domains found the file added nothing to its model of what ChatGPT cites and concluded ChatGPT does not rely on it. It is fine hygiene. Consistent, readable, corroborated facts are what moved.

How long does it take to show up after I fix things?

No vendor publishes a timeline, and the answers themselves change run to run, so a single check is a snapshot rather than a result. Fix the inputs, then measure monthly and read the direction of travel.

How do I test whether any of this worked?

Ask a fixed set of questions on a schedule and record the answers verbatim with the assistant and date, including the blanks. Include your city in the wording, since your location shapes what you are shown. One absence is not proof, and one mention is not a trend.
